To paraphrase Baroness Orczy: They seek him here, they seek him there/Those lefties seek him everywhere/Is he in Heaven, is he in hell?/That damned elusive Provocateur.

Provocateur is the nom de guerre of a number of gentlemen who have a wide experience of life. Their social circle stretches from the top of St James's Street all along Pall Mall. It also extends south to the Palace of Westminster and reaches as far east as the Garrick. It will also be available as a nom de fourrure for  ladies who wish to fly a flag of convenience.

John Major and Europe

The metaphors multiply. Some would have us believe that there is a stark choice. The ship of state, liberated at last, weighs anchor and sets course, the wind of freedom in its sails, for the open seas and distant horizons.   those who cast doubt on all that are clearly enemies of the people. Take your pick.

Well, I took mine years ago;  an “enemy of the people”, guilty as charged. I guess this affects whatever I say about John Major and the impact of the European debate on his seven-year premiership when the roots of today’s problems were dug in and watered.

True Valour

President Trump seems determined to defame his country, dishonour its values, trash its traditions and insult its fighting men. Under him, for 'duty, honour, country' read 'decadence, vulgarity and profanity.' One can understand why many sensible Americans concluded that he was the lesser of two evils: Hillary would have been ghastly. But she would at least have been sane ghastly. As it is, Caligula threatened to make his horse a Consul. American voters chose as their President - a horse's ass.
